The Macmillan Coffee Morning is their biggest fundraising event, where they ask people across the UK to hold a coffee morning and raise money for people living with cancer. On Friday 12th October, we hosted a coffee morning to raise money for this cause.  The children took part in making the various buns and biscuits to sell on the morning to help raise money and really enjoyed the experience. We raised a magnificent £100.00 which will help people living with cancer to live life as fully as they can.  Thank you for all your donations

On Monday 8th October, the children took part in a space day in line with World Space Week. The children carried out three different activities within their key stage. The activities varied from trying space food to making and testing out rockets! We were joined by a space engineer who worked with KS2 to look at what material would be best to make our space crafts. We also had some student in from York St John University who worked alongside the children. In the afternoon we all become astronauts in training and carried out a variety of activities which year 5 ran for us and this led us all to receiving a certificate from Tim Peake and becoming space commanders!

To celebrate National Poetry Day, on the 4th October, the children were lucky enough to meet and work with Terry Caffrey. Terry is an extremely talented performance poet. He is poet in residence at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and the Citadel Theatre in St Helens. Terry was commissioned to write by the Roald Dahl Foundation and had the lyrics to one of his songs (originally a poem) chosen to be one of the official children’s songs for the 2012 Olympics. All of the children in school spent time learning and performing one of Terry’s poems and they learnt how to create small books as a way into publishing their own stories and poems. They all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to continuing to learn about different forms of poetry in their classes over the next few weeks.

Year 3 and 4 recently visited Ilkley as part of their Geography topic. They were using orienteering skills to find places on a map and taking photos at given grid references. They were later fuelled by ice-cream allowing them to hike up the Cow and Calf. The children enjoyed sketching the magnificent views and listening to the local folklore ‘Rombald the Giant’.  A fantastic trip all round, despite some very tired legs!

This half term, the Reception Class went on their first school trip to Rodley Reserve! We had a lovely time fishing for tadpoles, searching for ladybirds and exploring the meadows in the sunshine. We even got to see a swan, with five baby signets! It was lots of fun.

On the 23rd of March 2018, the pupils of the Years 2 and 4 listened eagerly to the fantastic adventures of two superb boxers, Joe Egan and Waine Turner. The two heroes talked about the challenge of overcoming their personal hurdles when they were young: being bullied, lacking self-confidence, but having the resilience to achieve their dream of becoming successful boxers. Both men faced boxing legends such as Mike Tyson; they shared their adventures with the very inquisitive children of Khalsa Science Academy.
